COBAN, Alta Verapaz Outfit (Doll is included)
This beautiful outfit represents the town of Coban, Alta Verapaz. It was hand woven on a back-strap loom. The ensemble is topped with an elaborate headdress skillfully wrapped into the hair.
A charming city of 70,000 in habitants, Coban is the state capital of Alta Verapaz and a convenient base for exploring the area. Coban was founded in 1543 by Dominican priests and today is an important center of coffee and cardamom production. At the vivero Verapaz more than 650 species of orchids cultivated (including the Monja Blanca, Guatemala's national flower). The national orchid show is hosted here every December.
Guatemala’s most impressive festival of Indian traditions, the national folklore festival of Rabin Ajau with its traditional dance of the Paabanc, takes place in Coban in the later part of July or in the first week of August.
